Lesson 1 - Initial Project Setup
1. From the Project Menu, click on "Project Energy Manager".
2. Click "Perform Initial Project Energy Setup". Places will process the parcels of the project and determine which climate zone each parcel is in, as well as which census block each parcel is in. When the processing is complete, you will see the menu in step 3.
3. Year Built Settings – The year built is taken into consideration when calculating energy usage for a given parcel. There are three options to choose from:
  1. Use Median Year Built from Census Data – this option uses census data to determine the year built based on the Median Year Built for the census block that contains the parcel
  2. Use a Field From Project Shapefile – this option allows the user to select a “year built” field from the project shapefile that was initially uploaded to create the Places project
  3. Use Year Built Data Table – for SANDAG projects, there is a static lookup table which contains year built data on a per parcel basis

Select the year built option you would like applied to this project and click "Save Changes".

4. Place Type Energy Settings - Click on "Place Type Energy Settings". The Places Energy Model has energy usage information for various "sector types". Place types must be mapped to these sector types in order for Places to determine the energy usage for each place type. For each place type, enter sector percentages for all of the sectors that compose a place type (the sum of percentages for each place type should add up to 100%). For example, a Mixed Use place type might be made up of 50% "Residential <= 3 Stories" and 50% "Small Retail".

It is also necessary to enter a few other parameters for each place type:
- Average DU Size - The average size of a dwelling unit.
- Useable Roof % - The percent of the roof that could be used for laying down solar panels.
- Roof Tilt - The average angle of the roof.

Click "Save Changes" when you are complete.

5. DG Detailed Technology Settings / Technology Matrix - Click on "DG Detailed Technology Settings" from the Project Energy Manager. This tool is where all of the parameters are entered for the various DG technologies that can be applied to the project. Note: This is an advanced tool and should only be used by administrators.
6. Editing a DG Technology - Clicking on "Edit" for one of the DG Technologies on the DG Detailed Technology Settings page brings you here. Make any necessary changes and click "Save Changes" when finished. Note: This is an advanced tool and should only be used by administrators.
7. Allowed DG Technologies by Sector Type - Click on "DG Sector Type Settings" from the Project Energy Manager. Certain technologies are only applicable to specific sector types. Mark which sector types each DG Technology can be applied to. Click on "Save Changes" when finished. Note: This is an advanced tool and should only be used by administrators.
