Lesson 2 - Working with the Map – Orientation and Basic Functions

1. SCENARIO MENU – Look at the bottom box labeled "Scenario Functions."
Click on "APPLY PLACE TYPES USING MAP"

There are many basic functions found in the map view to enable you to move around and accomplish tasks within the map.

Zooming In

With this function, you can either:
a. Select magnification (2X,4X,8X,12X) then click on a place on the map, or
b. Draw a box around the map area you want to zoom in on

2. To select a specific magnification, the map will zoom in on the location that is clicked on the map. (It's often times more useful to use the map at a map size 2X, as more of the map can be seen at a time.)

Mark ZOOMIN (located above the map) and click on the center of the map

3. To draw a box around a specific area of the map to zoom in on

Mark ZOOMIN (located above the map) click and drag a box around the area you want to zoom in

Zooming Out

With this function, you can either:
a. Select magnification (2X,4X,8X,12X) then click on a place on the map, or
b. Draw a box around the map area you want to zoom out on

4. To select a specific magnification, the map will zoom in on the location that is clicked on the map. (It's often times more useful to use the map at a map size 2X, as more of the map can be seen at a time.)

Mark ZOOMOUT (located above the map) and click on the center of the map

Changing the Map Size

The default map size is very small. To increase the map size:

Pick 2X from the Map Size drop down menu (located left of the map) and then click “REDRAW”

6. The map area will now be double the beginning size.

NOTE: The remaining functions are addressed in Advanced Lesson 6 – Working in the Map View – Advanced Functions

Panning the Map

7. With this function, when you click on an area of the map, the map will center on the selected point.

Mark PAN (located above the map) click a point on the map where you want the map re-centered

The map will now be centered on the location clicked above.

Identifying Feature

8. With this function you can identify a feature (such as a parcel, highway, road or the longitude/latitude of a certain point)

Mark IDENTIFY (located above the map) and select the type of feature you wish to identify from its drop-down menu to the right

On the map, click on the feature you want to identify

9. ID RESULTS will appear in the small yellow box just above the map. For parcel queries, the results will display the parcel place type in the box along with the place type percentage.

Click on the place type link to see more detailed information for the parcel

10. This page contains three areas of information. The top box, "PARCEL INFORMATION FROM DBF FILE", contains information from the original parcel file uploaded to Places. The middle box, "PARCEL STATISTICS", contains statistics calculated by Places for that parcel. The bottom box contains information about any redevelopment that has taken place.
Mark Place Type

11. The most important function of this map is the MARK PLACE TYPE function. This function allows you to change land uses on the map. Marking place types is covered in detail in Lesson 3: Working with the Map - Marking Place Types

Layers

12. Familiarize yourself with the layers shown on the map. They can be turned on or off by checking the box to the left of the layer name and then clicking “REDRAW”. Notice the scale at which some of these layers are more or less useful. For example, "Parcel Lines" are not very useful when zoomed out, but become more important when zoomed in.

To turn a layer on or off, click its check box, then click “REDRAW”
